Koeman | Top managers shortlist after the shocking result against Benfica
Jurgen Klopp is among the five managers on Barcelona’s shortlist to succeed Ronald Koeman.
Barcelona suffered their latest setback on Wednesday, losing 3-0 to Benfica in the Champions League, and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been mentioned as a possible replacement.
According to rumours, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is on Barcelona’s five-man managerial shortlist to replace Ronald Koeman.
It’s also been reported that the club’s management has convened crunch discussions, with the main subject being whether they can afford to fire Koeman financially.
The Blaugrana are in free fall on and off the field, having been struck hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and winning just one of their past five games, as well as losing their first two Champions League group stage games for the first time in their storied history, as Benfica beat Bayern Munich 3-0.
Lionel Messi’s surprise exit this summer was owing to the Catalan club’s inability to pay his salaries, and it marked a new low for a team that had won 22 major championships in the previous 17 years.
Klopp is on the shortlist to replace Koeman, according to El Nacional, with Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag and club star Xavi Hernandez, who has been in charge of Qatari side Al Sadd since retiring in 2019.
Former Juventus player and manager Andrea Pirlo, as well as Belgium manager Robert Martinez, whom the Dutchman succeeded at Everton in 2016, are also being considered, according to Catalunya Radio.
