Everton’s James Rodrguez has joined Qatari side Al-Rayyan for an unknown amount.
James Rodriguez’s stint in the Premier League has come to an end, as the Colombian has left Everton following just one season with the club.
The Colombian playmaker, who was left out of his country’s team for the Copa America due to fitness concerns following his absence at the end of Everton’s 2020-21 season, was yet to appear in a competitive game for the Toffees this season.
Everton manager Rafael Benitez said earlier this month that the 30-year-old was not a vital player in his side and that the club was open to offers for the former Real Madrid striker, who won the 2014 World Cup Golden Boot.
Former manager Carlo Ancelotti signed James on a free transfer from Real Madrid last season, and he made 26 appearances for Everton in all competitions, scoring six goals and assisting on another eight.
James Rodriguez new adventure
With the Qatari transfer window still open, Al-Rayyan, who are led by Laurent Blanc, a former Paris Saint-Germain, and France manager, have now signed the Colombian international.
Blanc took over Al-Rayyan in December 2020 and led them to third place in the Qatar Stars League, behind Al-Duhail and Al-Sadd, both coached by Xavi of Barcelona.
James Rodriguez signing is a triumph for the league ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, albeit he will have to fight his way back into Colombia’s squad under Reinaldo Rueda.
Though injuries limited his playing time, James was a creative force for Everton under Ancelotti, creating 54 chances, second only to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the club (60).
