Official | Huge calciomercato.com bought by goal.com owners for 10m
The biggest football news website from Italy, calciomercato.com has been sold.
Goal.com’s private equity-backed owner has purchased Italy’s largest digital football news service, as the group increases its coverage of top leagues and clubs.
Goal.com drives over 400 million football fans to its websites and social media each month. The purchase adds 12 million monthly visitors to CalcioMercato.com, which was founded by majority shareholder and publisher Carlo Pallavicino.
Footballco is owned by Integrated Media Company, a part of US private equity firm TPG Capital. This is the company’s first significant growth. Footballco, which purchased a controlling share in Goal.com from DAZN, the sports streaming company, for $125 million last year, is aiming for annual sales of $100 million.
With their coverage, online sports sites have proven to be heavyweight rivals, attracting a frenzy of investment interest.
When the former FC Barcelona star first contemplated leaving the Spanish club last year, Goal.com, which competes with Disney’s ESPN, got an exclusive video interview with Lionel Messi.
Footballco CEO Juan Delgado stated that the CalcioMercato.com acquisition elevated Footballco to the top football platform in Italy while also increasing its European reach in “the world’s largest digital football advertising market.”
