Barcelona is interested in signing Sterling and Dani Olmo in January
Edgar Davids was Joan Laporta’s first-ever winter signing in January 2004, and the second-term Barcelona president will be hoping for similar luck in January.
According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has opened the prospect of bringing in elite talent in the January transfer market. This summer, the Camp Nou coffers have improved slightly, and the club is now in a position to make additions.
Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling and RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo are two players who have been linked with a move to Camp Nou this summer.
Pep Guardiola and City have granted Sterling permission to leave if he received a suitable offer. Mateu Alemay, Barcelona’s director of football, traveled to Manchester this summer to discuss Sterling with City, but no progress was reached.
Dani Olmo, on the other hand, is a popular player with Barcelona’s top management. The 23-year-old Spanish international, a product of Barcelona’s development system, has made significant progress over the previous two seasons, but it looks that RB Leipzig will be hesitant to let him leave, regardless of the offer price.
Edgar Davids, Laporta’s first-ever winter singing
Joan Laporta will remember his first-ever winter signing in January 2004, when he was president of Barcelona for the first time. Edgar Davids joined Barcelona on loan that winter after being relegated to the bench at Juventus. He went on to play 18 games (13 victories, 3 defeats, 2 draws) and leave a lasting impression in that short period.
With his aggressive and winning mindset, the Dutchman had an immediate impression and helped to inspire a squad that went on to win LaLiga the following season.
However, if we include Yerry Mina, Kevin-Prince Boateng, and Jeison Murillo (Martin Braithwaite joined later, in February 2020, owing to the injury of Luis Suárez and Ousmane Dembélé), Barça has not had much luck with winter acquisitions in previous years.
As a result, the club’s sports director, directed by Ramon Planes, will not want to repeat the same mistakes in January. Winter targets Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay did not arrive until the summer of last season.
